Shokz OpenSwim and OpenSwim Pro

The Shokz OpenSwim bone conduction headphones are specially designed for swimming and water sports such as triathlon. Thanks to their built-in storage and MP3 playback mode, you can listen to your music even underwater, where other Bluetooth headphones would lose their signal.

Why choose Shokz OpenSwim headphones?

An effective bone conduction system

Unlike in-ear headphones, sound from Shokz headphones is transmitted to the inner ear through the cheekbones and jawbone using bone conduction technology. This approach keeps your ears open, allowing you to remain aware of your surroundings while enjoying clear sound.

Built-in storage ideal for water-based sessions

As Bluetooth signals cannot be transmitted underwater, Shokz OpenSwim headphones work like a built-in MP3 player: simply copy your audio files directly onto the headphones.
The Shokz OpenSwim offers 4 GB of storage, while the OpenSwim Pro version provides 32 GB and also features Bluetooth connectivity, ideal for connecting to your phone or sports watch when you are out of the water.

Comfort and stability in the water

The Shokz OpenSwim headphones are lightweight and perfectly stable, even during the most dynamic swimming movements. Designed to suit all your activities, they stay securely in place whether you wear swimming goggles, a swimming cap, or both. Their ergonomic design ensures optimal comfort and complete freedom of movement during your water-based sessions.

Can the Shokz OpenSwim and OpenSwim Pro headphones be used out of the water?

Yes, the Shokz OpenSwim and OpenSwim Pro can be used out of the water. However, they are optimised for aquatic use, with excellent bass reproduction in this environment. If you plan to use them mainly on land, opt for the Shokz OpenRun, which offers better sound quality out of the water.

Please note: only the Shokz OpenSwim Pro combines MP3 and Bluetooth modes and features the latest Shokz PremiumPitch™ 2.0+ bone conduction technology, offering improved sound quality compared with the OpenSwim model.
The standard OpenSwim headphones only allow you to listen to music transferred directly onto the headphones, while the Shokz OpenSwim Pro also allows you to connect via Bluetooth, stream your playlists and even make or receive calls out of the water.

What are the differences between the Shokz OpenSwim and Shokz OpenSwim Pro headphones?

Connectivity: Bluetooth or not

  • The OpenSwim works exclusively in standalone MP3 player mode, as mentioned previously. It therefore does not feature Bluetooth connectivity. This mode avoids any connection loss, making it ideal underwater, where Bluetooth signals cannot pass through.
  • The OpenSwim Pro also features MP3 player mode and adds Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, which significantly changes how the headphones can be used out of the water. You can then use them like conventional headphones by pairing them with a smartphone to stream music, make calls or take part in video conferences.

Storage

  • The OpenSwim features 4 GB of internal storage, allowing you to store around 1,000 to 1,200 songs depending on file quality. This is enough for most swimmers to enjoy a varied selection of playlists, but it can become limiting if you want to store podcasts or uncompressed formats such as FLAC.
  • The OpenSwim Pro offers 32 GB of storage, eight times more than the OpenSwim. This is a real advantage for people who want to keep large audio libraries without having to regularly sort or synchronise their files.

Ergonomics, design and weight

The OpenSwim and OpenSwim Pro retain a similar structure: a rigid headband behind the head and bone conduction technology. However, the OpenSwim Pro is slightly more compact and lighter, weighing around 27.3 g compared with 30 g for the OpenSwim. The design and ergonomics of the Shokz OpenSwim Pro are also more recent.

Battery life

  • The OpenSwim offers around 8 hours of battery life in MP3 playback mode, which is enough for several swimming sessions before needing to recharge it.
  • The OpenSwim Pro offers 9 hours of battery life in Bluetooth mode and 6 hours in MP3 mode, a difference explained by its more advanced features. The good news is that it also supports fast charging, providing up to 3 hours of listening time from just 10 minutes of charging.

Audio quality and voice calls

  • The OpenSwim features PremiumPitch bone conduction technology and is not equipped to make or receive voice calls.
  • The OpenSwim Pro features a newer and more advanced version of Shokz bone conduction technology: PremiumPitch 2.0+, delivering richer sound, particularly in the lower frequencies. This is especially noticeable when using the headphones out of the water, as the sound quality is better than that of the OpenSwim. In addition, only the Shokz OpenSwim Pro allows you to make phone calls via Bluetooth. This makes it a truly versatile hybrid headset, not just a sports model.

Audio modes and equaliser

  • The OpenSwim does not offer advanced sound settings.
  • The OpenSwim Pro, on the other hand, offers several built-in sound profiles: a swimming mode, a standard mode, a vocal mode, and more. This allows you to adjust the sound according to the listening context and intended use, so you can make full use of all the headphones' features.

As you can see, each of the two versions is designed for different uses. The OpenSwim is ideal for regular swimmers looking for simple, waterproof and reliable headphones, without unnecessary features, and who plan to use them only occasionally outside the water and their training sessions. The OpenSwim Pro is designed for those looking for versatile headphones: swimming, running, cycling, remote working and calls, with a model that can be used both during sports sessions and in everyday life.
